Thanks for posting about the Wikimedia fundraising blog.
The main reason, as shown in the article, was back in 2002, the split off of the Spanish Wikipedia, when there was light suggestion of advertising.
It's nice to know, as a contributor, that your writing not only is going to remain free and "unowned" (thru the GFDL), but that the info can be experience without any chance of people throwing in bias towards our advertisers.
